The Medical City Clark Launches the First Burn Unit In Central Luzon

The Medical City Clark (TMCC) launches its Burn Unit, the region’s first and only specialized surgical facility designed to provide comprehensive and multidisciplinary care for victims of burn injuries.

The Department of Health considers burn injuries as a serious public health problem. Region 3 is said to have the highest reported burn injury cases followed by the National Capital Region (NCR) and the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR). Most burn cases in the Philippines involve chemical and electrical burns and firecrackers.

The TMCC is only the fifth health institution in the country to have a dedicated burn facility. Of the five institutions, three of them are in Metro Manila and the other one is in Davao City.

The TMCC Burn Unit is manned by a multidisciplinary team composed of experts in plastic and reconstructive surgery, emergency medicine, physical and occupational therapy, nursing, psychiatry and nutrition.

The unit utilizes a wide array of highly-specialized diagnostic and treatment equipment through all phases of burn care to provide superior health service to each patient.

“The TMCC Burn Unit’s specialty services include acute adult and pediatric burn treatment, plastic and reconstructive burn surgery, and repair of complex surgical wounds,” says Dr. Andre Espiritu, TMCC plastic surgeon and member of the Multidisciplinary Burn Team.

“TMCC Burn Unit’s protocol is based on the guidelines set by the American Burn Association (ABA). In the acute setting, priority is given to the resuscitation and stabilization of the patient,” adds Dr. Espiritu.

At the Burn Unit, wounds are assessed and dressed on a daily basis and surgical management consists of early excision and skin grafting to achieve optimum functional and cosmetic outcomes.

Another special aspect of the TMCC Burn Unit is its bathing system which has features that are highly flexible and can be customized to meet the specific needs of burn patients. The system has a wide range of control, comfort and safety options that are very relevant parameters in specialized burn care.

This height-adjustable and state-of-the-art burn treatment bath tub includes integration with a bath lift trolley that makes it one of the safest and most comfortable solutions to bathe dependent burn patients with the greatest possible efficiency.

The Burn Unit also has a burn mass casualty incident (MCI) plan in place. In case of a disaster scenario where in there will be a mass casualty involving burn victims, TMCC Burn Unit is ready to respond with its MCI protocol.

“Appropriate resources such as manpower, equipment and supplies will be recalled to attend to the sudden influx of burn patients. If however this is still not enough, we are in touch with other burn facilities and should be able to transfer patients to such facilities in a timely manner in order to ensure the delivery of utmost patient care to these victims,” says Dr. Carlos Primero D. Gundran, from the TMCC Department of Emergency Medicine and Multidisciplinary Burn Team.

The TMCC Burn Unit is located at the hospital’s third floor. For more information, you may call 045-300-8888 loc. 80122.
